Backflow Testing & Repair

Why Test Your Backflow?

Federal and state law requires that backflow prevention devices be tested annually to ensure they are functioning properly. The reason for this is that when water flows backward through the backflow preventer, the public drinking water source may become contaminated. The purpose of the backflow prevention device is to prevent this backward water flow, but occasionally these devices fail. To keep drinking water that is clean and free of contaminants, the law states that the backflow device must be tested annually by a licensed backflow tester.

Turfco Has Licensed Backflow Testers On Staff

Our backflow testing is a professional service done by one of the backflow testers. They conduct a test to see if there may be a backflow problem and if there is, find out what’s causing it and repair it so it’s up and working again. Not conducting a backflow test might put you at risk of having your water permanently disconnected.

Backflow Testing Process

The backflow testing process is performed by one of our licensed backflow testers who ensures that your water supply system does not have any contaminants and identifies plumbing systems where there might be dirty water entering through your water supply. A backflow prevention device helps stop any backflow that might occur. Our backflow testers have experience and professional certification from either the American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA) or the American Water Works Association (AWWA). For any repair work that needs to be done on the plumbing components of the system, we have one of our staff members who work closely with backflow testing and has a plumber’s license and mechanical skills to help with any repairs.

What Causes Backflow?

Backflow occurs when there is a water pressure drop in the water system which can be caused by heavy water usage from a local public source for example the fire department during an emergency. It can also be caused by damage to water supply lines and pump failures. Most of the time, the homeowner is unaware of when this happens, such as when there is a mainline break or when a garden hose is submerged in a swimming pool when filling it up, or when connecting the hose to a bug spray or weed spray.

How Pressure Changes Affect Backflow?

When any of the possible causes of backflow happen, the pressure changes lead to a reverse flow of water. When the device is working correctly, it doesn’t allow the water to flow back through the device; it keeps the water flowing in only one direction. It’s important to ensure backflow does not happen because one backflow event impacts not only one individual but also the neighborhood and possibly an entire county-wide water system.
